Sam Secord is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counseling and Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist providing therapeutic services at our Burnsville and St. Paul locations, and also offers Telehealth services. He received his master’s degree in December 2021 from Adler Graduate School and continues to pursue his licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Sam has worked extensively with substance use disorder and co-occurring trauma. Sam’s experience also includes running substance use disorder groups, couples counseling, providing individual, family therapy, skills services on grief and loss, sexual concerns, and trauma.
Sam’s theory combines Adlerian, Existential, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Systems Theory, mindfulness, and multiculturalism. In short, Sam’s belief is that every individual is unique and requires a tailored approach. His approach considers the client’s history, past trauma, life stressors, and how they view and understand themselves. Through this understanding, clients can begin to understand how their own experiences, strengths, weaknesses, fears, and support systems have influenced who they are today. Sam encourages his clients to see themselves as an active participant in their life who is capable of change, happiness, and defining their success.
Sam’s perspective is experiential, practical, and even fun as he navigates his sessions to understand that all clients and families have unique needs and goals. He desires to help individuals, families, and couples realize their potential, improve the relationships in their lives, and better their self-understanding. He brings an easy demeanor, trust, optimism, and usually laughter to his sessions.
Sam currently lives in Minneapolis, MN. He loves spending time with his wife, friends, and family. In his spare time, he enjoys backpacking, reading, woodworking, and learning new topics.
